If you are looking for a digital SLR camera for the more experienced photographer, we recommend the 10.1 MP Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. 11 years after the first Canon ELPH camera was introduced as an APS film point and shoot, Canon continued the heritage by bringing out the latest generation digital version, the Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH SD1000. The Canon SD1000 is a sleek and very compact camera that is well suited for casual family photography. Featuring 7.1 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom providing focal range coverage from 35-105mm in 35mm terms, a clear 2.5" LCD monitor and an optical viewfinder, the Canon SD1000 is small enough to fit in a purse or pocket, and is the type of camera that you are more likely to take with you rather than leave at home because it is too large or heavy. In our opinion the Canon SD1000 offers excellent image quality and a broad feature set for an ultra compact camera. The PowerShot SD1000 is available in black or silver and comes supplied with a Canon Rechargeable Lithium battery and charger. An easy recommendation.

Nikon D40X Top Entry Level Digital SLR

We selected the Nikon D40x as our top choice in the Entry Level Digital SLR category for a number of reasons. While it might not be the most full featured camera compared to some of its competitors, the Nikon D40x offers wonderful image quality with great consistency, combined with intuitive operation and user friendly ergonomics and controls. The internal image processing on the Nikon D40x does a very good job at rendering accurate colour and detail. A built-in Retouch Menu allows for handy quick editing in camera without the need of using a computer (Crop, Colour balance, D-Lighting, and a Monochrome B&W mode among others). Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 with 12x Zoom

If you are looking for a camera with an incorporated long range zoom, the 7.2 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 is our current favorite. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 incorporates 7.2-megapixel resolution with a 12x optical zoom (36mm - 432mm equivalent) LEICA DC lens with MEGA O.I.S., Optical Image Stabilizer that compensates for possible camera-shake when not using a tripod. The camera incorporates a joystick that allows easy manual control of focusing in addition to exposure settings, making the camera more compact and easy to carry.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ8 features a large, 2.5-inch LCD that uses a pixel-mixed readout method, improving brightness over typical LCD displays, and allows you to enjoy comfortable shooting even in fairly low-lit situations. The display is also easy to view from a low angle (e.g. when taking photos raising a hand upward to shoot the subject over the crowd) with the High Angle LCD function. The Panasonic DMC-FZ8 is available in both black and silver, and comes supplied with a high capacity Li-Ion rechargeable battery that will deliver up to about 300 shots per charge. The DMC-FZ8 is a full featured and capable camera wrapped in a small package that in general delivers very good image quality for a point and shoot.

Canon PowerShot SX100 IS with 10x zoom

The Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is the first release in the new Canon PowerShot SX series of great value super zoom digital compact cameras. Combining high optical zoom and user friendly operation in a remarkably compact form, the SX series is geared to perform in the hands of any member of the family, and includes full manual control for those with more experience. The PowerShot SX100 IS features, 8 megapixel resolution, a 10x optical zoom lens for getting closer to the action, and an optical Image Stabilizer unit built into the lens helps guard against camera shake under low light conditions. The SX100 IS incorporates a clear 2.5-inch LCD screen on the back of the camera for viewing images and changing menu settings. The camera is powered by conventional Alkaline AA batteries, although using rechargeable batteries is definately recommended. Enhanced Face Detection Technology helps the camera achieve accurate focus when taking people pictures. The Canon PowerShot SX100 IS provides a nice compact package offering good image quality and lots of attractive features at a very decent price point for its target audience of family photographers. Canon Powershot A570IS Digital Camera

The Canon Powershot A570IS is a compact camera that delivers very good results and value for the money. With 7.1 megapixels of resolution and a 4x optical zoom that benefits from a built-in optical image stabilization (IS) system that helps produce sharper results under lower light conditions, the Canon A570IS has plenty to offer the entry level digital photographer. With the ability to adjust exposure and ISO sensitivity settings, and with the option of adding dedicated accessories like lens converters for more wide angle or telephoto reach, or an underwater protective case, the A570IS can also serve as a pocket back up for the more advanced photographer looking to travel light. An optical viewfinder, and AA battery useage are two other attractive features of this camera. Although regular AA alkaline batteries will work, it is recommended to use rechargeable batteries, which would be optional. For those that want to shoot short movie clips (YouTube fans), the Canon A570 IS offers a pretty good movie mode that will capture movies at TV resolution (640 x 480) up to 60 frames per sec. Highly recommended.
